Agile Commons: “The Product Management Move to Agile”
This past Saturday, I attended PCAMP - an unconference for product managers organized by Enthiosys. The event drew over 400 product managers interested in sharing ideas and learning from one another. Agile discussions were everywhere. Take a look at the list of scheduled and impromptu topics!
It was great to see the level of interest in the product management community at understanding the new product management roles in agile organizations, and it was even greater to see agile product management experts (like Enthiosys and Rally) converging on the difference between the product owner role and the product manager role, a controversial topic a year ago.
If you are unclear on the difference between a product owner and a product manager, I highly recommend Rich Mironov’s excellent (and fun!) dilemma of agile product owner and product manager presentation. It’s consistent with Rally’s view on the topic.
Now that we are passed that role definition roadblock, the hot topic seemed to be: how to best organize to fulfill the new product management activities, often too many for one person. Tip: making a traditional product manager be the product owner is usually not the answer…
I also heard that the new product management track at Agile2009 this year received over 99 submissions. Wow!
Thanks Enthiosys for driving agile product management forward and for such a fun event. I can’t wait for PCAMP 2010. Sign me up!
