Purpose of the Agile Alliance
I’m sitting here in the Boston airport getting ready to fly home from a very productive Agile Alliance Board meeting. We ran most of the meeting as an open space, with all the of the virtues and some of the concerns that open space entails.
One session for which the entire board had energy/passion is the purpose of the Agile Alliance. We worked pretty hard to get what we think is a good purpose statement:
The purpose of the Agile Alliance is to support those who explore and apply Agile principles and practices to make the software industry productive, humane, and sustainable.
What do you think about this purpose statement?

I’m all for making the software industry “productive, humane and sustainable” although “making” the whole industry that or any other way is a big bite. Does the whole industry work for you? Will you be using force of law? Speeches and exhortations?
There’s a lot of telling other people what to do hidden in that mission. Why not show up each day being personally productive and humane, and support the people you know who do the same?
My bias is showing. Missions and movements leave me cold, while giving cover to much mischief. Why not a more personal mission: “The purpose of the Agile Alliance is to support those who work with their peers and colleagues each day, to be more productive, humane as they sustainably develop software.”
